Shahu Maharaj was born on 26 June 1874 in the Ghatge family of Kagal. His original name was Yashwantrao Jaysingrao Ghatge. He was adopted by Anandibai Ranisaheb in the royal family of Kolhapur on 17th March 1884 and renamed as Shahu Chhatrapati.

He traveled to England to attend the coronation of King Edward VII. He traveled all over India, observing the political, religious and social conditions of the country. Shahu Maharaj spread education in the state and gave active help to Bahujan Samaj for learning. He established hostels for students of different castes in Kolhapur city.

The first school of compulsory education was started at Chipripeta. Untouchability discrimination was not acceptable to them. Efforts were made to eradicate untouchability by encouraging untouchables to learn, job opportunities, promotion of various businesses, banquets and untouchability conferences.
Shahu Maharaj enacted revolutionary laws such as the Widow Remarriage Act (1917), the Interracial Marriage Act (February 23, 1918), the Bahujan Samaj Reserved Jobs, the Prohibition of Violence Against Women Act (1919), and the Divorce Act (1920). Shahu Maharaj established a jaggery field at Shahupuri, opened cheap grain shops, built a dam called Radhanagari. Maharaj established a branch of Satyashodhak Samaj in Kolhapur on 11 January 1918 and Arya Samaj in 1918. Shahu Maharaj’s birthday June 26, we celebrate this day as ‘Social Justice Day’.
Shahu Maharaj died on 6 May 1922 in Mumbai
